Ever since Spider-Gwen made her first appearance in Edge of the Spider-Verse #2, her popularity has skyrocketed. The Gwen Stacy-turned-webslinger character has since been seen in her own comic book series, as well as in several variations of t-shirts and merchandise.
Such popularity has had many people speculating on when/if we might see her on the big or small screen. The demand seems to be there, especially after a cool fan-made Emma Stone Spider-Gwen movie trailer went viral a few months ago. Now it seems that Spider-Gwen could be joining a new Spider-Man animated series that is set to be released this year.
As we know, Disney XD's Ultimate Spider-Man has been cancelled, and it's set to be replaced by a new animated series. New promo images of the new show feature Miles Morales, Venom and Spider-Gwen.
It should be noted that the new series by Robot Chicken's Kevin Schnick and Avengers Assemble's Philip Pignotti is described as focusing on an "insecure but courageous" Peter Parker.
With Tom Holland's Spiderman-Homecoming and the possible Miles Morales-led animated movie set to release this year, these promo images may simply signify one big spider-themed year. After all, ever since making a deal with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the MCU fold, the intent has been to bring the character back to his classic high-school roots. Morales and Stacy both fit nicely into that story angle. Fans are also curious as to whcih Venom incarnation will be included in that mix.
The new Spider-Man animated series is set to premiere on Disney XD sometime in 2017.
