It’s official! Matt Reeves will direct and produce The Batman. Following speculation that Reeves was a lock to be the new director after Ben Affleck stepped down, there were rumors that negotiations with the studio had broken down. In a surprise move, Warner Bros. announced in a press release that Reeves will indeed helm the next installment of the DC Extended Universe, proving those rumors false.
Reeves is well known for his work on the first Cloverfield and for taking over the Planet of the Apes franchise with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and its soon to be released follow up, War for the Planet of the Apes. His ability to move into an already well developed franchise and deliver stories that are well received by both critics and fans. This brings credibility to his take over of The Batman.
The press release was followed later in the day by the above tweet from Ben Affleck, welcoming the new director to the batcave and silencing any worries fans might have about him completely leaving the project.
